The Best Dramas of 2019 Run the Gamut of the Human Experience
The Best Dramas of 2019 Run the Gamut of the Human Experience
Everyone loves a little bit of drama. Fortunately, 2019 is overflowing with it. Just shy of three-quarters of the way through the year, and film lovers are set up with every genre of drama they could ever want. You want some reimagined Manson murders? They got you. Horror based in existential dread and/or lingering sunshine? Covered. The best drama films of 2019 is a hodgepodge of realism, fantasy, and touching family narratives that run the gamut of the human experience. Below are eight of the best (so far).
5) Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood
Robbie may have had to fight to get some more lines in Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood, but Tarantino's tinsel town epic wasn't all about capturing footage of her feet. Playing Sharon Tate, Robbie was able to provide the late actress with a sense of life and redemption—altering history to avoid murder and become friends with Cliff Booth (Leonardo DiCaprio) instead.
The Farewell
The Farewell is arguably the most powerful film out this year so far. Awkwafina helps anchor a poignant family drama about a girl who returns to China to say goodbye to her grandmother, who is unaware that she only has a few weeks to live. The film gives a thoughtful glimpse into a heartbreaking story that reaches across cultures and taps into the deep love that can only be found in family.

Rocketman
Taron Egerton won a Golden Globe award for his portrayal of Elton John in this 2019 biopic musical. The film focuses on John's fight for sobriety after a career marked by hard partying and substance abuse. The film has also been praised by Esquire for its realistic depiction of a gay sex scene.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
The culmination of what Iron Man started, Avengers: Endgame lived up to all of the hype—and then some. RIP Tony. (And our bladders.)
Midsommar (2019)
Director: Ari Aster
Florence Pugh in a flower crown? Lovely! Maybe she’s at Coachella? Wrong. She’s in rural Sweden for the mid-summer festival of a pagan cult. And things get strange and dark, fast.
Her Smell
Elisabeth Moss gives her best go at joining the popular music-movie universe in Her Smell. An early in the year performance is typically indicative of a film not slated for an awards run, but Moss gives an affecting performance that will absolutely linger throughout the rest of the year.

High Life
A24's trippy dive into the solar system has Robert Pattinson and his daughter dealing with a decimated earth and an existence that is very quickly coming to a dark conclusion (see: black hole). Less of a box office hit and more of a critical smash, High Life is one of Pattinson's best performances of his career.
