Berlin: Shark-Meets-Serial Killer Movie ‘Dangerous Animals’ Sells Wide (Exclusive)
They thought it was safe to go back into the water….
There’s been a bit of a feeding frenzy over Dangerous Animals, the new horror title from Australian director Sean Byrne (The Loved Ones, The Devil’s Candy). The “shark-meets-serial killer” movie stars Hassie Harrison (Yellowstone), Jai Courtney (Suicide Squad) and Josh Heuston (Dune: Prophecy).
More from The Hollywood Reporter
Harrison plays Zephyr, a free-spirited surfer, who is abducted by Courtney’s shark-obsessed serial killer and held captive on his boat, awaiting a gruesome end in which he will ritualistically feed her to the sharks below. Her new lover Moses (Heuston) goes looking for her, only to be caught by the deranged murderer as well.
Mister Smith Entertainment, which is handling international rights to Dangerous Animals, has sold the picture across much of the world, signing deals for most of Europe, as well as the Middle East and Asia. Major deals included a U.K. sale to Vertigo, a German buy from Constantin Film, a deal for France with The Jokers and a Canadian deal with Elevation.
Europe is all but sold out, with further deals for Italy (Blue Swan), Poland (Monolith Films), Benelux (18K) and Scandinavia (Svensk), among others. Sun/Diamond took the Latin America rights for the film, the Middle East is with Front Row Entertainment, Israel with United King, Turkey with Bir Film, Ukraine and the Baltic States with Goodeye, Malaysia with Golden Screen, the Philippines with Pioneer and Singapore with Shaw Renters. Kismet will release the film in Australia and New Zealand.
Range Media Partners is overseeing U.S. rights with a domestic deal currently being finalized.
Dangerous Animals was shot on Australia’s Gold Coast late last year and is currently in post. Producers are Troy Lum and Andrew Mason for Brouhaha Entertainment, Pete Shilaimon and Mickey Liddell for LD Entertainment, Chris Ferguson for Oddfellows Entertainment and Brian Kavanaugh Jones for Range Media Partners. LD Entertainment provided financing for the film.
