Beauty and the Beast: ABC Finally Reveals Josh Groban's Costume for Live-Action Special — And It's Wild
From the Broadway stage to community theaters across America, we’ve seen some bold Beast costumes in our day, but this one takes the singing, dancing cake.
Ahead of Thursday’s Beauty and the Beast: A 30th Celebration (8/7c), ABC has released a first look at Josh Groban‘s elaborate costume for the live-action/animated hybrid event.

If you’re surprised by ABC’s puppet-based Beast costume (which weighs more than 60 pounds!), you’re not alone. Executive producer Raj Kapoor recalls Groban’s jaw dropping upon seeing it for the first time: “He’s like, ‘I was not expecting this. It’s so clever. I’m so in,'” Kapoor tells EW. “He was like, ‘I’ll do whatever, because I already see what the vision is and it’s so different.'” The costume was designed to reflect how Groban’s character, Prince Adam, is essentially trapped in his new form.
ABC’s production combines footage from Disney’s original 1991 film with live-action, pre-taped performances from the special’s all-star cast.
Joining Groban on stage will be Gabriella Wilson (aka H.E.R.) as Belle, Joshua Henry as Gaston, Martin Short as Lumiere, David Alan Grier as Cogsworth, Shania Twain as Mrs. Potts, Jon Jon Briones as Maurice and Rita Moreno as the Narrator.
