Bald eagle sightings in Haywood
May 2—For years, readers have sent photos of a bald eagle they've photographed in the Lake Junaluska area.
More recently, others have sent in photographs of this grand bird sighted in the Lake Logan area and upper Crabtree areas.
On Easter Sunday, Canton photographer Patrick Jackson sent in photographs of a bald eagle he saw in the Sunburst area above Lake Logan.
This week, Mary Stori wrote that in all the 17 years she's lived in the Upper Crabtree community, she's never seen a bald eagle.
Her photograph included a bald eagle perched on Bald Creek Road.
"I snapped this photo after coming to an abrupt stop after rounding and spotting this majestic bird in the road," she wrote. "At first I thought it must be hurt, but after waiting a minute or two, it flew away and I saw no issues with his flight."
Three quick facts about bald eagles: They can fly up to 30 m.p.h. and can dive at speeds up to 100 m.p.h. Bald eagles develop the characteristic white head and tail feathers by 4-6 years of age and they can live 30 years or more in the wild.
