‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ Ending Broadway Run in January
“Back to the Future: The Musical,” a pricey stage adaptation of the beloved sci-fi adventure, is packing up the DeLorean.
The production will have its final Broadway performance on Sunday, January 5, 2025. The musical, which earned mixed reviews from critics, will have played for 18 months at the Winter Garden Theatre, and over 500 performances. The show’s producers said it has sold $80 million worth of tickets during its New York engagement. It will now move to Germany for the 2025-2026 season.

The closure isn’t surprising. “Back to the Future: The Musical” has struggled to attract crowds. Grosses stalled at $896,423 last week, with the theater playing to 86% capacity. That’s far less than the roughly $1 million or more in sales that the show was reporting over the summer. And given that “Back to the Future: The Musical” has a large cast and lots of special effects (the DeLorean is airborne at a certain point in the show), that commercial result isn’t sustainable.
“Back to the Future” will continue to play in the West End, where it debuted. It will also open in other major markets in the next 18 months, including Japan. The show recently announced an eight-year deal with Royal Caribbean to play the musical in its full physical form on the cruise line’s ships.
“With nearly 40 percent of our audience never having seen a production on Broadway before, I’m proud that at a time when theatre is viewed by so many as being inaccessible that this show was able to bring in a new audience and it is my hope that this legacy endures and these people return to see another Broadway show in the future,” Colin Ingram, the show’s lead producer, said in a statement.
“Back to the Future: The Musical” boasted a book by Bob Gale, who wrote the movie, along with new music and lyrics by Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy Award-winning Glen Ballard. It featured additional songs from the film including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode.”
