‘Awards Magnet’ live Oscars recap: Breaking down ‘Anora’s’ greatest day, Mikey Madison’s win over Demi Moore
Anora had the greatest day at the Oscars. How did it do it? Awards Magnet hosts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng broke down all the 2025 Oscars winners and losers live right after the ceremony.
Anora translated five of its six Oscar nominations into wins, including four personally for Sean Baker: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Original Screenplay, and Best Film Editing. He ties Walt Disney with a record four wins in one night, but Baker is the first to win four for the same film. Its fifth trophy was for Best Actress for Mikey Madison. After its wins at the Producers Guild of America, Directors Guild of America, and Writers Guild of America Awards, Anora reclaimed its Best Picture frontrunner status. However, it still wasn't expected to take home five Oscars, especially after getting shut out at the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild Awards. This is the third year in a row in which the Best Picture champ won at least five Oscars, including four above the line, after Everything Everywhere All at Once and Oppenheimer, both of which nabbed seven. Before that, the last Best Picture winner to win five was The Artist. Are we back in an era of Best Picture sweeps?

The odds did not favor Madison's win. With just the BAFTA as her major precursor, she was second in the odds to Demi Moore (The Substance), who had the Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Awards -- and the narrative. But we've seen this film before, and we know the ending. The stronger film trumps the narrative. See: Olivia Colman (The Favourite) over Glenn Close (The Wife), Anthony Hopkins (The Father) over Chadwick Boseman (Ma Rainey's Black Bottom), and Emma Stone (Poor Things) over Lily Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon). Like Madison, Hopkins only had the BAFTA as his precursor. Even Brendan Fraser was in the stronger film by the end when he scored Best Actor two years ago for The Whale, a non-Best Picture nominee that also won Best Makeup and Hairstyling, over Austin Butler in Elvis, a Best Picture nominee that went 0-8. So why did so many people stick with Moore?
Plus: Adrien Brody going 2-for-2, Conan O'Brien as host, that interminable James Bond tribute, and more.
