Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards: ‘The Substance’ & ‘Wicked’ Win Night’s Big Awards As ‘SNL’ Takes Home A Quartet Of Trophies
The 12th annual Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards were handed out tonight at the Beverly Hilton with Wicked actress Marissa Bide on hand to present the final categories. It was a good thing, since Wicked took two of the night’s biggest prizes for Best Period and/or Character Make-Up and Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling in a Feature Length Motion Picture.
The Substance won in the other two film biggies: Best Contemporary Make-Up and Best Special Make-Up Effects.

Other double winners were The Jennifer Hudson Show — for Best Makeup and Best hairstyling in Daytime TV — and Secret – Beetlejuice Beetlejuice: Lifesaver for Best Hairstyling and Best Makeup in Commercials and Music Videos.
The night’s top multi-category winner was Saturday Night Live, which took Best Contemporary Make-Up, Best Period and/or Character Hair Styling, Best Special Make-Up Effects and Best Period and/or Character Make-Up in Television Special, One Hour or More Live Program series. Ironically, no one from the venerable show could attend, given that this weekend sees them getting ready for the Prime Time airing of the 50th Anniversary Celebration.
Dancing with the Stars stars and spouses Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson are hosting the ceremony, where awards will be presented in 23 categories spanning makeup and hair styling artistry in motion pictures, television, commercials, music videos and live theater. A new award will be presented for the first time. It is Broadway and International Live Theater Production: Make-Up and Hair Styling.
Since the modern MUAHS Awards began in 2014, one of its marquee film winners for makeup or hair has gone on the claim the Best Makeup and Hairstyling Oscar every year except twice — but one of those was last year. The Academy Award went to Poor Things, which was up for two of the guild’s awards but went home empty-handed. The only other year was in 2022 when The Eyes of Tammy Faye won the Oscar but was shut out at the MUAHS.
Maestro and Saltburn were the big film winners at the 2024 MUAHS ceremony, each taking home two prizes as Barbie won for Period Hair Styling and/or Character Hair Styling.
MUAHS also is honoring several with career awards tonight. Allison Janney will receive the 2025 Distinguished Artisan Award, presented by her The West Wing co-star Dulè Hill, and RCMA Makeup is set for the guild’s Vanguard Award. Buffy the Vampire Slayer make-up artist Todd McIntosh and Terminator hair stylist Peter Tothpal will be honored with lifetime achievement awards.
