'Ender's Game' release date pushed to same month as 'Catching Fire'
Ender’s Game, the adaptation of Orson Scott Card’s seminal sci-fi YA novel starring Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, and Abigail Breslin, has staked out some interesting territory today. Originally slated for release on March 15, 2013, Summit Entertainment announced today the film had been pushed to Nov. 1, 2013.
That puts Ender’s Game — currently in production with director Gavin Hood (X-Men Origins: Wolverine) at the helm — just three weeks ahead of the release date for the thematically similar Hunger Games‘ sequel Catching Fire. That franchise is the newly minted crown jewel for Lionsgate — which recently purchased Summit for $412 million. Apparently, the Summit and Lionsgate folks think there’s room in the same month for two dystopian literary adaptations about a group of adolescent children rounded up by a totalitarian government to do battle with each other. Of course, Nov. 2013 is a long way off, and Catching Fire has yet to nail down its director, let alone commence production. Someone may flinch yet.
