Amber Tamblyn and David Cross: All About the Actors' Relationship
The 'Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants' star and the 'Arrested Development' actor met on an airplane in 2007
David Cross and Amber Tamblyn have starred alongside one another in multiple projects, but their biggest roles are being husband and wife.
Although their worlds often collided at industry events, Cross and Tamblyn first officially met on a flight from Houston to Louisiana in 2007.
Speaking of the life-changing moment during a joint appearance on the live comedy show Running Late with Scott Rogowsky, Cross said that there was a lot of “aggressive staring” from Tamblyn before they ended up switching seats so they could sit next to each other. They spent the remainder of the flight poking fun at the SkyMall catalog.
"He was in the seat next to me and I was like, 'Oh my God, that's David Cross!' “ the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants star recalled. Cross added that it was “so obvious” that they were going to get together after that.
The pair married in 2012 and welcomed their first child together, a daughter, in 2017.
From their collaborations to their family life, here’s everything to know about David Cross and Amber Tamblyn’s relationship.
They had a movie moment first kiss
Tamblyn and Cross are both professional actors, so it was only right that their first kiss was like something out of a romance movie.
During their appearance on the live comedy show Running Late with Scott Rogowsky, the Arrested Development actor detailed the moment he first locked lips with his wife.
With the Spider-Man TV show theme tune playing in the background, the two shared a kiss. "I took the opportunity to say, 'Hey, this is our song,’ " Cross said with a laugh.
One of their first dates included a romantic picnic
Cross was on a mission to wow Tamblyn in the early days of their relationship. During one of their first dates, he pulled out all the stops with a romantic sunset picnic on Brooklyn Bridge.
“One of the first dates David ever took me on, we rode our bikes up on the Brooklyn Bridge. When we got to the top of the arch, he pulled out a bottle of red wine, cheese and crackers from his backpack and we put a blanket down,” Tamblyn told the New York Post in 2017. “We ate and drank and hung out at sunset, facing the Statue of Liberty.”
The actress said that there is “nothing more romantic” to do in New York City, and this was another way that Cross stole her heart.
They got married in 2012
The couple took their relationship to the next level and married in October 2012 during a scenic outdoor ceremony. Tamblyn opted for a nontraditional mustard yellow lace dress and bare feet.
In October 2023, to celebrate their 11th anniversary, Tamblyn shared a sweet tribute to her husband.
“Get you a husband that still kisses you like the day you met 16 years ago, and make sure to eat a tuna fish sandwich right before you do. It will really kick off the romance,” the actress captioned an Instagram photo of the couple sharing a kiss on the beach. “Happy anniversary to my favorite satirist, my grouchy sweetheart, my sensitive, curious, love.”
They have a 19-year age gap
Cross is 19 years Tamblyn’s senior, but the age gap isn’t a concern to the couple.
"I was slow to make any moves because of our age difference, and also because she was a fan,” Cross explained on Running Late with Scott Rogowsky.
In response to the mention of their large age gap, Tamblyn joked, “If anyone's wondering, I'm 14!”
They are parents to one daughter
The husband and wife are parents to one child.
Tamblyn announced her pregnancy in a candid essay written about motherhood for Glamour.
“Motherhood has been heavily on my mind because I am going to be a mother soon,” Tamblyn wrote in 2016. “I’m pregnant, with a daughter on the way. I think constantly about the world I am bringing her into. Will I get a phone call from my daughter someday, one she never wanted to make? Will I have to share with her my story, and the story of her great-grandmother’s words to her grandmother?”
The couple welcomed their daughter, Marlow Alice, in late February 2017.
“My daughter is growing her payos out nicely. Good morning, world! Marlow loves you,” Tamblyn captioned the first front-facing photo of their daughter that she shared. In his own post featuring the same photo, Cross jokingly wrote, “Somehow my wife gave birth to a 55-year-old furrier from Crown Heights [Brooklyn]. I’m investigating.”
They enjoy date nights in New York City
The family lives in Brooklyn’s DUMBO neighborhood — although California native Tamblyn wasn’t originally the biggest fan of the borough. “I have to say, I didn’t love Brooklyn at first,” she told the New York Post in 2017.
Now, she enjoys the parks, the people and the culinary delights, and often heads out for date nights with Cross in and around their neighborhood. They like stopping in their favorite bar, Hartley’s, for a beer before walking over to Prospect Park.
“I used to be in love with Manhattan parks until I saw Prospect: It’s vast, with these rolling hills of grass, and reminds me of Hyde Park in London,” Tamblyn told the outlet. “It’s gorgeous!”
They have attended couples’ therapy
In their 2023 movie You Hurt My Feelings, the pair portray a husband and wife who attend couples therapy sessions — something that they have done in real life.
"David and I have been in couples therapy before," Tamblyn told PEOPLE in June 2023. "I don't know any relationship that has lasted past 10 years that hasn't [been in couples therapy]."
"And if it has, then something's wrong with those people if they haven't done couples therapy at some point," she added.
