Don't Be Mad, But These 22 Polarizing "Bridgerton" Opinions Make Some Good Points
Recently, we asked the BuzzFeed Community for their most unpopular Bridgerton opinions, and boy, oh boy did you deliver. Here are some of the hottest takes:
?? Warning: Spoilers ahead for both seasons of Bridgerton! ??
1."I hated the build-up with Kate and Anthony."
"They had the same scene about 57 times. They're alone, they smush their faces close and hyperventilate, but don't actually kiss or anything. They're finally a couple and that's great, they're good together, but the whole season was their sexual chemistry and it got repetitive. And they did Edwina dirty. I hope she finds her own happy ending."
"The sexual chemistry in Season 2 is just so boring. They just stood there breathing on each other all the time...like huh? The Duke's eyebrow raise did more for me than the entire second season could."
2."Colin is the worst Bridgerton brother."
"He's completely blind to Penelope drooling over him, and I really don't want to spend another season watching him almost, but not quite realize Pen loves him."
"I hate that they gave all Colin’s good qualities from the book to Benedict in the TV show. I am actually rooting for a new man to come into Penelope’s life to give Colin some competition. Maybe Colin will grow up and become the man he is in the books."
3."Lady Whistledown's identity shouldn't have been revealed so early."
"I was expecting a period Gossip Girl!"
4."I don't root for Eloise at all. Every other word out of her mouth is some snarky, unpleasant comment that she (mistakenly) thinks is clever, and she's a terrible friend to Penelope."
"Eloise's character is poorly written. She's supposed to come across as a strong feminist, but she only listens to herself and cares about her own thoughts and beliefs."
"She treats Penelope (her supposed best friend) like a pet and abuses their one-sided friendship. She refuses to hold a conversation with other ladies because they're not as smart and "open-minded" as her. Most of the time it seems like she doesn't even like her own family members, especially Daphne because she just wanted to be happily married and start a family. Her snarky comments just come off as entitled, and it sucks because I can see Eloise being a really good character if they didn't hammer everything about her to the extreme."
5."I prefer Anthony over the Duke."
"I'll admit I'm biased because I like my men serious and intelligent."
"Maybe it’s because I read the books, but I like Anthony’s character development."
6."Daphne should have married the prince."
"Now don’t get me wrong, I love the Duke, but he was not right for her until the very end. The prince wanted the same things, he genuinely liked her, always told her the truth, was free of drama, and was overall an amazing and kind person. He wasn’t that bad looking, and I’m sure she would have learned to love him over time."
7."I don’t like how [Anthony and Kate] handled their situation with Edwina."
"They tried to stop themselves at first. But then they were not satisfied and overall handled it so badly. If they didn’t lie and betray Edwina and were just honest to themselves, I would’ve liked them WAY more."
"I’m sorry, but I could never, not even in my wildest dreams, have a singular romantic thought about my sister’s boyfriend, much less act on it…
What Kate did was sheer sister on sister crime and for Edwina to end up where she started is just inexcusable!!"
8."I kinda hate the books. There is no chemistry between anyone in the books and a lot of the characters come off as incredibly annoying and shallow."
"I think the TV show is so much more engaging, and the characters are much better. Sorry, not sorry."
9."Benedict should be queer in his series."
"Stop with the queer baiting and either give us our queer regency-era romance with Benedict or don’t queer code him as heavily as they have."
"Benedict should end up with a guy! #MakeBenedictBi"
10."I don't think Claudia Jesse should be playing Eloise."
"I think she's a great actress, but she's a woman in her thirties playing a teenager. A lot of the naivety Eloise has/portrays feels weird coming out of her mouth. It's a real Dear Evan Hansen situation."
11."There is a bit of an issue with the wigs. Particularly in Season 2."
"Daphne’s wig was AWFUL! Especially in the Pall Mall scene. It was just BAD!"
12."The books were better. At least when it comes to the second season."
"The bee sting! The marriage halfway through, falling in love, and NO FIGHTS OR SCANDALS for the family as a whole. Shondaland took over and made it too dramatic. It’s a love story that makes you feel good, not written to stress you out like her usual fare. Unhappy with a lot of the changes in Season 2 overall."
"Book Kate and Anthony are so much better than show Kate and Anthony."
"The first season followed the main storyline in the books so masterfully, and what they added to fluff up the story into 8 episodes also made sense and complimented the main story. As someone who has read all the books, I am so disappointed in the second season! They completely changed the main Kate/Anthony storyline, and I don’t even like the alternative of what they did instead. They’re dragging out the Kate/Edwina/Anthony conflicts and the Bridgerton scandal from the cancelled wedding for way too long, that it’s become repetitive, boring, and tedious compared to the book’s storyline."
13."Penelope is the absolute worst."
"She exploits every single relationship she has to further her own agenda. She outed Marina only when it would possibly affect her obsession with Colin. If she really loved Colin she could have informed him privately somehow and let it be his choice, but she robbed him of his agency. Daphne almost ended up with Berbrooke because of how she decided to frame the narrative around her being the diamond and to antagonize the Queen. Then when Eloise finally figured out she was Whistledown, the gaslighting that went down was truly disgusting. And there are about a dozen other examples of her basically just being a trash human."
14."We didn’t get to see enough of Anthony and Kate as a couple!"
"I wish we had more time to see them in a relationship working through conflict. Simon and Daphne got the backend of the season together while Kate and Anthony had barely any scenes as a couple."
15."Honestly, I'm not sure I'd like any members of the Bridgerton family if I met them in real life."
"Penelope is a jerk. Eloise is entitled and rude. Daphne was kind of boring and basic, and I much prefer Kate."
16."Prudence is hysterical and I love her."
"She deserves her own season."
17."Eloise needs to end up with a woman."
"I know who she's supposed to end up with. I've read the books many times in the past 10 years, and I love staying true to the books, but show Eloise should not end up with a man."
"I love the relationships in the books, but I would also love some queer relationships in the series. You're telling me zero out of eight siblings are queer?!?! This is already a weird fantasy version of the Regency era. As long as I see the Bridgerton family being absolute icons (as they are in the books), that's all I need."
18."The second season spent too much time on the new Featherington storyline and not enough with the main couple."
"The new Lord Featherington could have easily just been a man who doesn’t care about the ton and just gives the ladies what they want. We didn’t need the weird engagement and then almost affair with the new lord."
19."Gregory and Hyacinth deserved way more screen time in Season 2."
"They got about a quarter of what they received in the first season."
20."Lady Cowper is honestly a boss."
"She’s conniving, no doubt, but she puts in the work. I want to see less of the Featherington storyline, but you gotta have mad respect for the hustle."
21."I really like Penelope, but I just do not care about Lady Whistledown."
"I think that entire plot could be removed completely and the story wouldn’t miss it."
22.And finally, "the first season was super steamy, and I think fans are disappointed that there’s less sex this time around."
"Hopefully the third time is a charm and they amp it up next season."
"ONE sex scene and a whole bunch of almost kissing that actually looked like maybe Anthony was having a stroke? Nope. Not what I watch Bridgerton for and we all know it. Know your audience. It is meant to be smut. Give me the smuttiness."
