‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ and ‘Wicked’ lead 2025 Oscar nominations: See the full list
And it has come down to this.
After months of hype, campaigning, predictions, and pivots, the 2025 Oscar nominations arrived Thursday to provide clarity in a muddled awards season.

Leading the way: Emilia Pérez (13 nominations), The Brutalist (10), Wicked (10), A Complete Unknown (eight), and Conclave (eight). Those films will compete with Anora, Dune: Part Two, I’m Still Here, Nickel Boys, and The Substance.
With its 13 nominations — including Best Director (Jacques Audiard), Best Actress (Karla Sofía Gascón, the first openly trans person to be nominated for acting), and Best Supporting Actress (Zoe Salda?a) — Emilia Pérez set a record for an international film, eclipsing Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Roma, which each had 10. The Spanish-language, Mexico-set French-imported musical’s tally matched last year’s leader, Oppenheimer, which went on to win Best Picture.

But without an Oppenheimer-esque juggernaut dominating the precursor awards, it’s expected to be a tight race with formidable competition. The Brutalist, starring Best Actor frontrunner Adrien Brody as a Holocaust survivor who tries to make his way in postwar America, also scored nominations for Best Director (Brady Corbet), Best Supporting Actress (Felicity Jones), and Best Supporting Actor (Guy Pearce, the first of his stellar career). We’ll see if the revelation over the weekend that the film used AI to enhance the Hungarian speech of Brody and Jones becomes a footnote or a stumbling block.
Wicked, the blockbuster adaptation of the hugely, um, popular Broadway stage musical tallied nominations for both lead witches, Cynthia Erivo (Best Actress) and Ariana Grande (Best Supporting Actress); however, filmmaker Jon M. Chu was a notable omission for Best Director.

In the lead actress race, Demi Moore capped her comeback story by earning her first Oscar nomination for The Substance as an older actress who undertakes extreme measures to remain relevant in Hollywood; she’ll compete against Gascón, Erivo, Anora breakout Mikey Madison, and Fernanda Torres, the star of I’m Still Here, Brazil’s contender for international feature which also snagged a Best Picture slot. In addition to Brody, the lineup for Best Actor includes Timothée Chalamet for channeling Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, Colman Domingo for the prison drama Sing Sing, Ralph Fiennes as the embattled cardinal in the papal potboiler Conclave, and, in one of the bigger shocks, Sebastian Stan, for playing a young Donald Trump in The Apprentice.
There were some other surprises when the nominees were unveiled by Rachel Sennott and Bowen Yang in the unusually low-key announcement ceremony, which took place from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater without the usual throngs of media in attendance following a series of wildfires that devastated the Los Angeles area and delayed the Oscar schedule. Denzel Washington (Gladiator II), Selena Gomez (Emilia Pérez), Angelina Jolie (Maria), Daniel Craig (Queer), Nicole Kidman (Babygirl), and Challengers were among the hopefuls that did not make the cut.
