Nothing like a little father-son shade.
While hosting the 76th Emmy Awards Sept. 15, Dan Levy roasted his dad Eugene Levy for failing to land a role in one particularly iconic TV show. (Click here to see who won big at the annual award show.)
“One thing about being a working actor in a room like this is you really come face to face with the jobs you didn’t get,” Dan joked during the ceremony at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles. “Fun fact: my dad came very close to getting the role of Toby Ziegler in The West Wing.”
“Well, I wouldn’t call that a fun fact,” Eugene deadpanned. “But yeah, the role went to the other guy, who was Richard Schiff.”
When Dan reminded his dad that Richard won an Emmy for his performance on the acclaimed drama—which aired on NBC from 1999 to 2006—Eugene retorted, “Again, why is that a fun fact?”

But the elder Levy had a roast of his own up his sleeve, asking his son, “How was your audition for Ripley?” After cameras panned to a giggling Andrew Scott—whose performance in the 2024 miniseries earned him a nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie—Dan briskly replied, “Never heard back.”
Fortunately, the duo already have quite a few Emmys between them. Eugene has won four throughout his career, including an Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series win for Schitt’s Creek. As for Dan, his work on the beloved comedy earned him four Emmys of his own, including Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series. Plus, the pair made Emmy history as the first-ever father-son duo to host the show together.
