17-Year-Old Melbourne Singer-Songwriter Kaiyah Mercedes Shares Stunning New Album
Naarm/Melbourne-based 17-year-old singer-songwriter Kaiyah Mercedes has just unveiled her sophomore album Trying To Hate You, a nine-track collection of glamorous, introspective indie-pop songwriting.
Produced by Seetali Mack and mixed by Garrett Kato (Julia Stone, Ziggy Alberts), the young artist’s new LP continues her powerful and moving queer coming-of-age story, exploring the complexities of discovering one’s sexuality while searching for love and drowning in heartbreak.
Kaiyah Mercedes – ‘TRYING TO HATE YOU’
“Trying To Hate You is about unrequited love at its simplest level,” Mercedes explains in a press statement. “Each track explores a new perspective and a new situation when it comes to loving someone who doesn’t love you back. The album is a journey of the emotions that come with this situation, from professions of ‘trying to hate’ this other person to the acceptance of the beauty of love despite its unrequited nature.”
Title track ‘Trying To Hate You’ is an introspective indie-pop-meets-electronic introspective on modern-day romance, which comes alongside an elegant music video inspired by the golden age of Hollywood.
