17 Movie Characters Everyone Hates Who Really Aren't That Bad
Recently, we asked the BuzzFeed Community to tell us the movie characters that are unfairly hated. Here are some of their responses!
1.Nate from The Devil Wears Prada
"Andy WAS being an asshole, and the only proof you need is what she did to Emily. If you've ever been in a real relationship, you'd know how weird it'd be if your partner completely changed her morals and opinions in a couple months. Not to mention how she was allowing the flirting from [the] blonde dude."
2.Wendy from The Shining
"From the beginning, you can tell that all she’s trying to do is keep her family together. She is constantly walking on eggshells around Jack to prevent him from blowing up. It is heavily implied from the first introduction to Wendy that Jack has an anger issue and a problem with alcohol. When she is telling the social worker about how her son Danny was injured, she did everything she could to convince not only the social worker, but herself, that Jack is a good man and a good father. Wendy overcorrects on the sweet niceties to cover up all the boiling tension underneath the surface. I think she acts exactly as a lot of people would if they were in the situation. ... She comes off meek and annoying, but really she’s a badass mom who saved herself and her kid."
3.Hans from Frozen
Disney
"He had good intentions the whole time, but at the end, the trolls put a curse on him that turned him evil so Anna would end up with Kristoff. The trolls hint to this in their song 'Fixer Upper.'"
4.The Baroness from The Sound of Music
"Tell me ONE THING this woman did wrong. She literally was just living her life! And when she saw that the Captain had feelings for Maria, she gracefully bowed out and never blamed either of them."
5.Rose from the Star Wars films
"I really don't know why people hated her character so much. Was she my favorite of all time??? No, but Rose was perfectly likable. Don't even get me started on all the anti-Asian comments the actor got on social media...Unacceptable."
"There was nothing wrong with her. She was just kinda introduced late in the trilogy and her arc was to save Finn and some space horsies and then do nothing in the third movie. The writers did her wrong."
6.Sharpay from High School Musical
Disney Channel
"Sharpay was kind of a bully for the way she treated Ryan, but otherwise, she honestly never did anything that bad. Moving the callbacks was ultimately Ms. Darbus's decision, and she didn't do anything to sabotage Troy and Gabriella's ultimate audition. It's super frustrating when you work for something your whole life and someone who has no experience in it steps in and takes your spot."
7.Troy from High School Musical 2
Disney Channel
"People really get SO pressed about Troy's actions in High School Musical 2, but tbh, I don't think he did anything wrong. College is mad expensive and he was just trying to take advantage of the opportunities Sharpay was giving him. He never cheated on Gabriella, and though she's entitled to feel neglected, I thought the rest of the Wildcats were way too hard on Troy!"
8.Carol from Captain Marvel
Marvel
"Captain Marvel. Need I even say more?"
"So many ... articles and Youtube videos made by primarily men saying she was too stoic and didn't smile enough and was overpowered, and how she was a monster for stealing that dirtbag's motorcycle, and how she was some weird covert thing to make women masculine or whatever. Trust me, if you go to the comment sections of literally anything with Captain Marvel or Brie Larson in it, there is still to this day a section of people just ready to say one or both are shit while also just blatantly lying about the character and the actress."
9.Miranda from Mrs. Doubtfire
"She was married to a man-child who couldn’t be bothered to step up and actually help her with the parenting and the adulting. She got fed up, and that’s why she got divorced. Perfectly justified. And as for Daniel’s suggestion that he watch the kids after school? Considering what an irresponsible man-child he has been up to that point, it’s understandable that she would be uncomfortable with the arrangement. Maybe she could have done better with the custody arrangement, but then again, it’s not like she took full custody. She had the kids see him on weekends, which was kind of the norm back in the '90s. ... The reason she lets him watch the kids at the end of the movie is by then, his playing the 'Mrs Doubtfire' character caused him to grow up. I’m not saying she was perfect, but she really didn’t deserve the hate she got."
10.Lavender Brown from the Harry Potter films
Warner Bros.
"Lavender Brown. It's not her fault that Ron basically took advantage of her crush on him to get revenge on Hermione in [their] sixth year for dating Viktor Krum in her fourth year. Also, a lot of people think she's annoying, but she's not even half as bad compared to actual bad characters in the Harry Potter series. In fact, Lavender was a Gryffindor who bravely fought (and died) in the Battle of Hogwarts."
11....And Cho Chang from the Harry Potter films
"It doesn't help that the filmmakers changed the plot in Order of the Phoenix to Cho betraying Dumbledore's Army (for those who haven't read the books, it was originally Marietta Edgecombe, who is also a Ravenclaw). I would be sad too if my boyfriend was killed. Not to mention the excess additional pressure she receives throughout The Order of the Phoenix, as mentioned by Hermione."
12....And Fleur Delacour from the Harry Potter films (and books)
Warner Bros. Pictures
"I know that she starts off somewhat antagonistic because she insults Dumbledore and Hogwarts in the beginning of The Goblet of Fire. But she later warmed up after Harry saved her sister, Gabrielle, in the Triwizard Tournament. She also joins the Order of the Phoenix against Voldemort's regime and stands by Bill after he gets severe scars from a werewolf attack (I actually don't understand why Molly even thought Fleur would leave Bill for that). She's not superficial, but rather down-to-earth, loyal, brave, and tough. It seems like JKR did a lot of 'girly' characters dirty, tbh."
13.Kylo Ren from the Star Wars films
"I have seen many people who dislike Kylo because they were disappointed in the new trilogy and the fact that Disney marketed him as the next Darth Vader when he was nothing like him. The first movie showed how vulnerable he was — something that Darth Vader could never be. So fans immediately took a dislike toward him. I HATED the new trilogy. [I] just thought that this was a very unnecessary trilogy made only for money. BUT Kylo/Ben's redemption story and the bond between Kylo and Rey was definitely my ... favorite two things about the movies."
14.Teresa from The Maze Runner
"She was trying to find a cure and could have saved thousands of people. Not an ideal scenario, but a lot more people would have lived."
15.Star-Lord/Peter Quill from the MCU
Marvel
"Star-Lord’s been getting a lot of hate lately, but I think it’s just that some people don’t like Chris Pratt. He’s a super cool character. And yeah, he messed up the plan in Infinity War, but if that wasn’t supposed to happen, don’t you think Strange would’ve stopped him?"
16.Summer from 500 Days of Summer
"So many people watch the movie and hate Summer, but that’s completely missing the point of the story. Tom projected all these unrealistic fantasies onto Summer, even though she was upfront about what she wanted from the very beginning and broke it off with him as soon as it was clear they weren’t on the same page. Sure, it sucks for Tom that he got his heart broken, but Summer was in no way obligated to be in a serious relationship with him."
17.And finally, Anakin from the Star Wars prequels
Lucasfilm
"I know Anakin did terrible things, but I mostly just felt bad for him. His mother was killed, he was constantly manipulated and left out, and he was terrified something might happen to his wife and child. While I don't think that justifies his actions, I feel like some people just think he's whiny and immature, and that's not quite fair. Also, Hayden Christensen was perfect as Anakin and I don't get why people hated him in the role so much."
