16 killed in collapse during K-pop concert in South Korea
The collapse of a ventilation grill at a South Korean concert venue Friday led to the deaths of 16 concertgoers, while at least nine others were reported seriously injured, according to news outlets local to the area.
Various musicians had come together to perform an outdoor concert at Pangyo Techno Valley in Seongnam, which is southeast of the country’s capital, Seoul. According to local news, witnesses reported seeing a small crowd climb onto the raised ventilation platform for a better view of the performances. The grill buckled as the reported group of 25 attendees climbed onto the vantage point.
Those caught in the collapse fell at least 10 meters into an underground parking lot during a performance by the K-pop group 4Minute. Victims of the collapse not pronounced dead at the scene were rushed to four different hospitals in the area following the collapse.
The death toll was initially reported at 14, as some of those caught in the collapse died on the way to the hospital. According to local reporters, some of those under hospital care are currently believed to still be in critical condition.
