From Paris to Breakdown: A Timeline of Kanye West’s Life Leading Up to His Hospitalization
Things have taken a scary turn for Kanye West following a string of headline-making incidents that ultimately lead to the rapper’s tour cancellation and hospitalization Monday.
Though famously outspoken, West’s recent actions have been cause for concern in the wake of wife Kim Kardashian West‘s scary robbery nearly two months ago.
As the star gets treatment for sleep deprivation, here’s a run-down of everything that has transpired between the Paris incident and West’s health emergency.
Oct. 3, 2016
West was in the middle of performing at the Meadows Music & Arts Festival when he learned that wife Kardashian West had been robbed at gunpoint in her Paris hotel room.
The rapper abruptly stopped his rendition of hit “Heartless,” telling the New York crowd, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry. Family emergency, I have to stop the show.”
Earlier in the week, West was also in Paris for Fashion Week with his wife, partying with Kardashian West and her family at Balmain’s LouLou’s restaurant soiree.
A source told PEOPLE that Kardashian West was “hysterical” when she called West after the robbery, saying, “He said she was really upset and it took him a few seconds to understand what she was saying to him. He wanted to get to her as soon as he could. He told her that he couldn’t care less about the jewelry; he’s just thankful that she’s okay.”
Just hours after the early morning Monday incident, Kardashian West returned to New York City, where she was greeted by West. A source told PEOPLE that West was “very angry” about what happened to his wife, and planned to step up security.
Another insider added that the rapper felt “helpless.” They said, “This is a guy who isn’t used to feeling helpless at all. He’s usually in control. And now he realizes that he could have lost her, and there wasn’t a thing he could do about it.”
Oct. 4, 2016
The star rescheduled two concert dates on his tour in the wake of Kardashian West’s robbery, moving an Oct. 4 show in Philadelphia and an Oct. 6 stop in Detroit.
The Saint Pablo tour stops were instead moved to the end of December, extending the original end date of Nov. 1.
Oct. 7, 2016
Five days after Kardashian West’s life-changing incident, a source told PEOPLE that the rapper was in a “positive head space” back home in Los Angeles.
Though the incident was one of West’s worst fears come true, the source said, “he’s not driving himself crazy with things that are not inside his control.”
On Oct. 7, West returned to the stage in Chicago, marking his first public appearance since the incident. West did not address the robbery during his performance, however.

West was spotted back in Los Angeles after performing in Canada earlier in the week. While the rapper was touring, Kardashian West remained at home on “lockdown” a source said, focusing on “family time.”
Of how West was supporting his wife and kids, a source close to the rapper told PEOPLE, “He’s putting the needs of his family first, which of course takes precedence over everything else in his life.”
The insider added, “ thinks a lot about their public face, their fame, and what they can be to people, how they can reach out to their fans and influence people in a positive way. So, I wouldn’t be surprised if each of them … applied different strategies moving forward about how they roll out their public lives.”

Although Kardashian West was still out of the public eye on her 36th birthday, West made sure to pay tribute to the reality star with a heartwarming gift: a special video montage of old memories.
Played to the tune of West’s “Only One,” the video documented sweet and silly moments at Kardashian West’s childhood home and included footage of mom Kris Jenner, brother Rob Kardashian, sisters Kourtney and Khloé, and her late father Robert Kardashian Sr.

Taking the stage in Oakland, West went on one of his infamous rants, complaining about news that rapper Frank Ocean’s two 2016 albums were ineligible for consideration at the upcoming Grammy Awards. (Ocean purposely did not submit them for consideration.)
He told the crowd, “If his album is not nominated in no categories, I’m not coming to the Grammys. As artists we gotta come together.”

As Kardashian West began navigating her return to the public eye, a source assured PEOPLE that she was under no pressure to do so from West. In fact, the insider said of the couple, “They seem hunky-dory.”

West got political during a San Jose, California, concert, revealing not only that he didn’t vote, but also that if he had, he would have cast his ballot for the President-elect.
The revelation was met with boos, and inspired further ranting from West. Though the rapper said he thinks that black lives matter, he claimed that the focus on racism was too much. “This world is racist, okay? Let’s stop being distracted to focus on that as much. It’s just a f—ing fact. We are in a racist country. Period,” he told the crowd.
A source told PEOPLE afterward that West was “basically saying everyone has a right to their opinion and it’s important to have a dialogue about it. He was not espousing political views.”
The insider noted, “It was strictly an egalitarian message. He was saying ‘Hey, let’s have a dialogue where everyone’s opinion is respected.’ ”

Two nights later, at a Sacramento, California, tour stop, West ranted again — this time about pals Beyoncé and Jay Z.
“Beyoncé, I was hurt because I hear that you said you wouldn’t perform unless you won Video of the Year over me and over ‘Hotline Bling,’ ” West said, alluding to the “Formation” singer’s victory over him and Drake at the August Video Music Awards. “In my opinion — now don’t go dissing Beyoncé, she’s great. Taylor Swift is great. We are all great people. We are all equal. But sometimes we be playing the politics too much and forget who we are just to win.”
Then, addressing Jay Z directly, he said: “Call me, bruh.”
“You still ain’t called me. Jay Z, I know you got killers. Please don’t send them at my head,” he added, before eventually telling the press to “have a field day” and ending the concert early. He then canceled his Sunday show in Sacramento.
Hours later, he flooded his rarely used Instagram account with grainy archival fashion photos. The 99 images appeared to originate from vintage Maison Margiela look books.

On Monday, West officially canceled all remaining dates of his Saint Pablo Tour. A representative for the rapper confirmed to PEOPLE that remaining tickets “will be fully refunded at point of purchase.”
A source told PEOPLE that the rapper was “just exhausted,” explaining, “He’s been working around the clock on fashion design, both on his own line and the Adidas line. He’s a notorious workaholic, so balancing both that work – which is extremely important to him – and the rigors of the tour every night, it really wore him out.”
Later, news broke that West was hospitalized in Los Angeles. An insider said, “He is exhausted and currently dealing with sleep deprivation. He went to the hospital at will under the advice of his physician. He’s fine.”
The source added that “he was not restrained” and that “he went freely,” later saying, “my understanding is he has slept intermittently and eaten as well. But the sleep deprivation thing is real.”
Fire department radio traffic revealed, however, that authorities were called to the scene of a “psychiatric emergency,” according to TMZ. The site reported that West was taken to UCLA Medical Center for a psychiatric evaluation after “acting erratically,” reportedly at trainer Harley Pasternak’s home.
