Kate Upton Lashes Out Over Justin Verlander’s Cy Young Loss
Models can be mean! Kate Upton took a page from Gisele Bündchen‘s book and went postal over her man’s recent loss. (ICYMI, Gisele screamed at the press that Tom Brady couldn’t “f***ing throw the ball and catch the ball” after his team lost the Super Bowl in 2012.) Upton’s fiancé, Justin Verlander, hadn’t lost a game though. He simply failed to win the Cy Young Award.
Then Kate went crazy. The 24-year-old model, who became engaged to the Detroit Tigers pitcher earlier this year, took to Twitter to express her extreme displeasure over the situation, and she didn’t mince words. “Hey @MLB I thought I was the only person allowed to f*** @JustinVerlander?!” she wrote.
Her message was retweeted nearly 64,000 times and earned over 100,000 likes (so that’s something).
So why is Upton so bitter? In a nutshell, because she thinks the selection process was unfair. Max Scherzer, Rick Porcello, and Verlander were rotation mates for five seasons in Detroit and all three of them were at the top of the list for the honor, as of Wednesday. Ultimately, though, Scherzer won the NL honor and Porcello beat Verlander for the AL prize — but not because he got the most votes (sound familiar?).
Porcello beat Verlander despite getting just eight of the 30 first-place votes from members of the Baseball Writers’ Association of America. Verlander, on the other hand, got 14 first-place votes and was accidentally left off two writers’ ballots (oops). Because of the way the fancy math worked concerning the rankings, Verlander was edged out. This was the first time ever that the AL Cy winner didn’t get the most firsts. So now Upton’s mad.
Upton argued that since Verlander had the most first place votes (despite being left off several ballots), he should be the winner.
She then addressed Porcello directly.
She then retweeted a post from her future brother-in-law, Ben Verlander, who also plays baseball, that showed what she believed to be evidence supporting her argument that Justin was the rightful winner.
Porcello received a $100,000 bonus for his win, while Verlander, who also won back in 2011, would have collected a whopping $500,000 had he nabbed the title.
But while Upton was going crazy on social media over the slight, it didn’t seem to have much effect on the winner (even though she called him out by name). “I’m not the one who made the decision,” Porcello said during a conference call when he was asked if he was bothered by all the flack. “I honestly don’t care.”
No word yet on what Upton thinks of that.
