NYFW Trend: Leather Hair Accessories
Leather hair accessories ruled the runways at New York Fashion Week
The Fall 2015 runways at New York Fashion Week have somehow managed to make hair accessories cool. That’s no easy task. From butterfly clips to scrunchies to banana clips to tortoiseshell claw clips to bra strap headbands, the hideously tacky hair accessories outnumber the tolerable ones 8,000 to 1. So when I saw three examples of classy—CLASSY—hair accouterments on the runways this week, the sea change was undeniable.

First up was Derek Lam, where hairstylist Orlando Pita used PHYTO mousse, hairspray, and custom-made holders made of leather and chopsticks to pull back hair into a ponytail at the nape of the neck. Pita said unlike traditional hair accessories, this design was streamlined and modern.

The very next day, I spotted Orlando Pita wrapping strands of metallic leather around slicked back ponytails at Carolina Herrera. The show had an aquatic theme, and the stylist felt the shimmy accessories accentuated the wet look created with TRESemme hair gel. I asked him if he thought leather hair accessories were a new trend and he was caught off guard. “You think in terms of trends, but I think in terms of what designers want,” Pita said. “The look at Derek Lam was more real and wearable, this is more dressed up lacing. But go for it! Please say I started a trend.” For those who want to give this look a go, Pita used silver on blondes and pewter on brunettes. “I felt like silver on a brunette was too ‘Barbarella,’”

Then Anthony Turner used Bumble hair products and a leather headband at Proenza Schouler. The look was supposed to be be “anti-pretty” with matte hair and the accessory as the focal point. To DIY try using some Bumble Surf Spray. It will make your hair matte and add texture and grip so a headband will stay put.
